Manzini Region Migration to New Generation Network

6 December 2014 - Recently through our column the corporation described the SPTC Migration to New Generation Network which was described as the transfer of customers from one technology to another. It was further highlighted that most customers in the different regions have been migrated except for a few which include all customers in the Manzini region. The upcoming weekend then marks the last miles of the migration process as we prepare to migrate the country’s Hub- the Manzini Region. Customers in the Manzini region shall start enjoying fast and reliable voice and data services after the upcoming migration scheduled for the 5th – 7th of December 2014.

Why the Migration?

Migration is done for the benefit of customers in terms of service availability, quality of service and customer experience. In pursuit of providing world class telecommunications services to our customers, SPTC embarked on the migration to New Generation Network (NGN) project in 2008.

The Swaziland Posts & Telecommunications Corporation has been running on the Time Division Multiplexing system for many years, the Corporation has been undertaking a migration project for the past three years and has been gradually moving customers to the New Generation Network (NGN) technology. NGN is an internet based technology which combines voice, internet and video and converts it to internet packets which are then transmitted over one pipe, the packets can take different routes depending on the most effective and efficient route.

Improved service availability in the NGN is guaranteed since loss of information is minimal as signal packets have the intelligence to detect the fastest, shortest and alternative routes as opposed to the old Time Division Multiplexing signals which follow only one route and direction.

Quality of service that is enjoyed by our customers is premium after migration. Reliability of our network is guaranteed because this system has the capability to re-route cut signal packets to the next available route. Customer experience of our services is also optimised in the new system as a result of being migrated. Service delivery is cheaper as resources for voice, internet and video are shared in the NGN technology.

Timeline and Service Interruptions

The Manzini region migration shall start on Friday afternoon and should take a maximum of 48 hours to complete. This is however largely determined by the number of customers to be migrated to the new system. During the migration exercise, customers can generally expect unavailability of other services on the NGN technology. After the migration process, some services may not be restored and customers are requested to report those as faults.

The upgrade will result in service interruptions from Friday 19:00 hrs. In the event that your service is not restored by 17:00hrs on Sunday 07 December 2014 please call the contact centre on 800 2000.

Call Barring Procedure

Due to the migration, the process of call barring (secret code) will change.

Below are the new instructions of locking and unlocking your fixed line.

The new password should be 4 digits.

Activation: *54* password 1#

De-activation: #54* password#

Please note that currently all lines have been given a default password, which is (1000).

To change password: *541* old password *new password* repeat new password#

After the cutover, ADSL users are requested to reset their modems to restart their internet. In the event that you experience any problems, please visit the nearest telecentre or call the contact centre on 800 2000.
